vis com: initial sketchbook

these are the first inital ideas that i drew down onto paper. as the first task introduced us to the idea of simplification i wanted to try and practice this a lot in my sketchbook. this also makes it easier for myself down the line as putting my drawings onto illustrator - it will be easier to do if my drawings are simple to begin with.

i also looked into other items to go with traditional wear such as the japanese umbrellas, but i decided not to go with this as i wanted to focus more on the outfits and hairstyles.

showing more process of simplification. i am doing that in these two pages. i find it really interesting to draw how i would draw normally and then try and break it down from there, this really helps me to see what details are needed and what details i can cut down on and simplify. it is a really interesting process for me, as someone who is a lover of intricacy, however i am finding this really fun.

i did this page centering around japan culture, even adding in some pokemon references (the pikachu bean) because i wanted to see how i would simplify these items too. however, i really want to just stick with traditional wear. i am really interested in the national flowers though and have found drawing cherry blossoms really fun. i'm trying to find ways to simplify them but still make them recognisable.

here are some sketches using the dimensions we are being given. i think it really helps me to draw things within dimensions as i get a real feel for how the piece will turn out in the end.

on this page i was kind of playing around with different ways to draw the little characters and kimono and found that i really liked the little character that i drew. i want to see what she would look like as a final piece but i'm not sure if this will be too character based and not enough focus on the garment itself.

i was also trying to discover other ways in which i can represent cherry blossoms. here i am using ink and pencil crayon. i have found that the ink introduces a nice flowing shape to the branches which i think fit it really well. however, remembering that this is a brief to be done on illustrator i have decided to not carry on with these ideas.

vis com: traditional wear

Thai
Bulgarian
next, i just want to look at traditional dress from around the world and see if anything becomes inspiring. there is a lot of interesting dress wear so i want to collect them all here.
Japanese

Indian
Greek

Korean

Albanian
Finnish
i really love all of the colours of all the different countries. i think doing something about the traditional wear would be interesting as some people probably don't know a lot of traditional clothing. i think as well as doing traditional clothing i would also add other aspects of the city into it so it gave people more of an idea what it was. one thing that i think will be difficult is if i choose something complicated it would be hard to do it in illustrator so i would have to try and simplify it in some way, without losing the essence of the wear.

vis com: traditional weddings

Whilst researching asian cultures I found that a lot of them had different outfits for what people wear at weddings and how they are done. I thought this might be an interesting idea to try out, so i am going to do some research on some country's weddings.

The National Flower of Korea

The National Flower of KoreaTThe national flower of Korea is the mugunghwa (무궁화), rose of sharon. Every year from July to October, a profusion of mugunghwa blossoms graces the entire country. Unlike most flowers, the mugunghwa is remarkably tenacious and able to withstand both blight and insects. The flower’s symbolic significance stems from the Korean wordmugung, meaning immortality. This word accurately reflects the enduring nature of Korean culture, and the determination and perseverance of the Korean people.

 Mǔ dān--牡丹
The national flower of People's Republic of China is considered as peony(Chinese: 牡丹, Pinyin: mǔ dān) by publics, but it's not designated by the government.
The peony is among the longest-used flowers in Eastern culture and is one of the smallest living creature national emblems in China. Along with the plum blossom, it is a traditional floral symbol of China, where the Paeonia suffruticosa is called 牡丹 (mǔdān). It is also known as 富贵花 (fùguìhuā) "flower of riches and honour," and is used symbolically in Chinese art. In 1903, the Qing Dynasty declared the peony as the national flower.

The Vietnamese has a famous folk poems meaning that “In the pond, nothing’s more beautiful than lotus, the flower of the dawn”. The elegance of the lotus is often cited in the Vietnamese folk songs and poems. To the Vietnamese, lotus is known as an exquisite flower, symbolizes the purity, serenity, commitment and optimism of the future as it is the flower which grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty.

Ratchaphruek is chosen as national flower of Thailand because it is widely known to Thais, because of which it can be plant and seen anywhere throughout the country. It bears beautiful cluster shaped flowers in summer. The color of flowers is shining yellow contrasting great importance similarly to the color of our national religion Â‘Buddhism' and the color of Monday when His Majesty King of Thailand was born.
